This large, lumbering vehicle transports the basic building components of a structure from its old location to its desired new position.

Packing Up and Moving

You do not build Base Movers directly. Instead, this is the unit that you will receive when you choose to Packup a structure. You can then move the building to a new location.

The Base Mover is very slow and has no defenses other than its high health. If you plan to move a structure across long distances, it is best to provide it with an escort.

To put up the building at its destination, use the “Packup/UnPack” button on the Special Menu or press the i key with the Base Mover selected. This will produce a building placement cursor just as if you were using a Construction Rig. Place the structure, and the Base Mover will trundle over and begin construction. Unpacking a building takes about as much time as building it initially.

Note that while you have a building packed up into a Base Mover, that structure is not considered to exist and provides no function. For example, if you pack up your only Headquarters, you will lose your mini-map. If you pack up a building that is a prerequisite for other units or buildings, you won’t be able to build those things that depend on it until you unpack the building or build a replacement.

Unconventional road construction.

Not all buildings can be packed up. Only the Freedom Guard can pack up their buildings.

If you pack up a damaged building, the resulting Base Mover will also be missing some of its health. Likewise, if the Base Mover is damaged when it unpacks back into its structure, the resulting building will be damaged. Base Movers can recover their health at a Repair Station (or via a Mechanic). Because repairs performed on a vehicle do not cost credits (whereas repairing a building does), this could even be used as an inexpensive (but very time-consuming) way of repairing a building.

Packup/Unpack can also be used as an unconventional way to build roads. Virtually all structures produce a footprint of flat dirt underneath their bases when constructed, and they leave this dirt behind when the building is gone. You can convert certain types of terrain (most notably swamp) into hard-packed dirt by constructing a building there temporarily, then packing it up and moving it. Unpack it and pack it up again to extend the “road.” Units move more quickly over dirt, so this can be used to, for example, significantly increase the movement rate for your Freighters to and from a resource, thereby speeding your income. (You could also accomplish the same thing by selling or destroying the structure, but not as cheaply.)
