Feared by many, envied by most, and copied by few, the Tachion Tank is one of the power-houses of the Imperium army.

Combat

You really can’t go wrong with a Tachion Tank. It deals full damage to all types of units and has twice the health of virtually any other unit in the game. This tank is very durable, shoots fairly rapidly, and handily out-ranges Laser Turrets. It dies quickly to a Neutron Accelerator though. However, a group of about four or five Tachion Tanks can generally take out a Neutron Accelerator without losing more than two of their own number, assuming nothing else is attacking them.

The main downsides to the Tachion Tank are its cost and build time, which are required to offset its power. Still, the build time is not insignificant, so you may wish to have several Assembly Plants up if you plan to build many of them. Also, these tanks cannot hit air, so you will want to have Bions or Mobile Air Defenses around to deal with any air threats that come along.

Aside from their regular damage output, Tachion Tanks do come with one final feature onboard: a self destruct sequence. This destroys your tank and damages anyone who is standing one or two tiles away. The range is not that great, and damage tolls decrease the further the victim is from the tank, so try to get close to your enemy before setting this off. Also, the damage output of the resulting explosion is scaled based on the tank’s remaining hit points, so in theory it’s best used when the tank has high health. On the other hand, a tank with high health probably would be better off fighting back using its cannon, so in reality the time to use self destruct would be if your tank is surrounded by enemy infantry and is being overwhelmed. Just try not to let any of your own units get caught in the blast.

Since Tachion Tanks represent a serious investment, it’s a good idea to keep them alive (at least until you blow them up). Build one or more Repair Stations and set the tanks’ Damage Tolerance to allow them to seek repairs where necessary.
